Xi champions elevated collaboration and growth within the BRICS coalition.
On Wednesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping called on BRICS members to align with the rising tide of the Global South and respond to the aspirations of nations seeking to join the BRICS framework. He emphasized the urgency of advancing membership expansion, strengthening ties with partner countries, and amplifying the representation of developing nations in global governance. Xi’s remarks were made during the 16th BRICS Summit, where he urged action to bolster the influence of these nations on the global stage.
Guardians of Common Security.
Xi urged BRICS nations to take the lead in safeguarding peace, advocating for them to act as guardians of collective security. He emphasized adherence to three critical principles: avoiding the expansion of conflict zones, preventing escalation of ongoing disputes, and refraining from provocation by any involved parties. These principles, he stressed, are pivotal to achieving a swift de-escalation of the Ukraine crisis. Additionally, Xi called for BRICS to lead the way in innovation, propelling high-quality, sustainable development for the future.
Pioneers in Sustainable Development.
In a call for environmental stewardship, Xi encouraged BRICS nations to become practitioners of sustainable development, coining the concept of a “green BRICS.” This vision positions the coalition as global leaders in ecological responsibility and environmental protection. Moreover, Xi championed the notion of a BRICS rooted in justice, advocating for the reform of global governance systems to ensure fairer representation and equitable participation by developing nations.
Advocating Peaceful Coexistence.
Xi further urged BRICS members to promote peaceful coexistence and foster harmony among civilizations. In a historic decision, the summit announced its intent to invite additional nations to join as BRICS partner countries, a move hailed by Xi as a significant step forward in the group’s development trajectory. This decision underscores the expanding influence and growing inclusivity of the BRICS coalition.
Expanding Educational Opportunities.
To support the growth of BRICS cooperation, Xi announced China’s initiative to establish 10 overseas educational centers within BRICS countries. These centers will offer training to 1,000 education professionals, including administrators, teachers, and students, enhancing educational exchanges and collaboration among member states. On the same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin, chairing the summit, led a 10-member meeting in Kazan, as reported by TASS. Additionally, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres traveled to Russia to participate in the summit, according to AFP.
