On Thursday, the China Coast Guard (CCG) conducted law enforcement operations in the territorial waters of Huangyan Dao, located in the South China Sea. The patrols were carried out to reaffirm China’s sovereignty in the region, according to an official statement from the CCG.

Chinese Military Conducts Combat Readiness Patrols.

The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Southern Theater Command reported that naval and air forces were mobilized on Wednesday for combat readiness patrols over Huangyan Dao’s waters and airspace. These actions were described as lawful assertions of territorial control.

Announcement of Territorial Sea Baselines.

The patrols follow China’s recent declaration of the territorial sea baselines surrounding Huangyan Dao, which was released earlier in the week. This move reinforces China’s maritime claims in the contested area.

Expert: Patrols Reaffirm Sovereignty Claims.

Chen Xiangmiao, from the National Institute for South China Sea Studies, stated that the patrols underscore China’s firm stance on its maritime sovereignty. He noted that these operations signal China’s commitment to enforcing its territorial rights.

Patrols to Maintain Order and Deter Threats.

According to Chen, the patrols are also intended to regulate the waters around Huangyan Dao and send a clear message to nations like the Philippines and the United States that China will respond with law enforcement if necessary.

Military Law Expert Highlights Deterrence Effect

Ding Duo, from the Institute of Maritime Law and Policy, mentioned that these patrols serve as a warning to the Philippines, dissuading any provocative actions. China is seen to be proactively protecting its maritime interests.

Chinese Response to Philippines Missile Procurement.

In reaction to reports that the Philippines is considering acquiring the “Typhon” missile system, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian criticized the move as provocative. Lin urged the Philippines to reconsider its actions, warning against escalating regional tensions and emphasizing the need for peace and stability in Southeast Asia.
