Foreign intelligence agencies have been increasing efforts to infiltrate China’s data sector, aiming to steal vital information and jeopardize national security, according to China’s Ministry of State Security (MSS). The public is urged to remain vigilant, safeguarding both national and personal data from foreign threats.

The Complex Risks of Data Handling and Security.

The MSS highlighted the inherent risks throughout the data lifecycle due to its intangible and difficult-to-trace nature. Threats such as data leaks, tampering, unauthorized access, and misuse can occur at any stage, including collection, transmission, storage, and destruction, presenting serious security concerns.

Safeguarding Data Security Requires Collective Effort.

The MSS emphasized that protecting data security is a systemic issue that necessitates broad public involvement. The public must stay alert to foreign espionage activities aimed at stealing sensitive national and personal data to reinforce the country’s data security collectively.

China’s Digital Sector Thrives Amid Heightened Data Security Measures.

Despite rising security threats, China’s digital technologies, such as smart manufacturing, 5G, and digital consumption, continue to progress, supported by strong data security protocols. These innovations are driving substantial growth in the digital economy.

Significant Growth in China’s Digital Economy.

China’s digital economy has expanded dramatically, growing from 11.2 trillion yuan ($1.57 trillion) in 2012 to 53.9 trillion yuan in 2023. This growth has been a major driver of the nation’s GDP, accounting for 66.45 percent of economic growth and contributing to the rise of new productive forces.

Public Vigilance is Key to Protecting National Data Security.

The MSS called for heightened public vigilance in safeguarding data security. By protecting sensitive information and staying alert to foreign threats, the public plays a crucial role in ensuring the continued growth and security of China’s digital economy.
