"Arab American Voter Shift Impacts Kamala Harris in Michigan"

Kamala Harris garnered at least 22,000 fewer ballots than Joe Biden did during the last presidential election in Michigan’s cities with the densest Arab American and Muslim populations, according to a Guardian analysis of the raw electoral data from this pivotal battleground state.

Harris Trails Biden in Key Cities.

The figures also indicate a modest uptick in support for Donald Trump in these areas, with his vote count rising by approximately 9,000. This suggests that the erosion of support for Harris is more likely due to Arab Americans either abstaining from voting or opting for third-party candidates.

Moreover, Democratic backing diminished in seven precincts nationwide, where there are notable concentrations of Arab American or Muslim citizens. Data from the Arab American Institute showed a combined decrease in voter turnout in these precincts, falling from around 4,900 votes in 2020 to merely 3,400 in the current election cycle.

Democratic Votes Drop Nationwide.

Further analysis derived from exit polls conducted by the Council on American Islamic Relations revealed that 53% of Muslim voters cast their ballots for Jill Stein. The same poll indicated that 21% of Muslim voters backed Trump, while 20.3% voted for Harris.

Muslim Voter Preferences Shift Significantly.

The decline in Democratic support in Michigan’s Hamtramck, Dearborn, and Dearborn Heights—three cities with some of the highest Arab American and Muslim populations per capita in the country—accounts for nearly 27% of the 81,000-vote margin between Harris and Trump in the state.
