The Chinese Foreign Ministry has responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent remarks about increasing military sales to India, cautioning against using China as a pretext for geopolitical strategies. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized on Friday that international cooperation should not be turned into a tool for bloc confrontation.
Trump Announces Expanded Military Cooperation with India
According to a report by Reuters, Trump stated on Thursday that the U.S. will boost military sales to India starting in 2025. He also mentioned that Washington would eventually provide India with F-35 fighter jets, a move seen as a major step in strengthening defense ties between the two nations.
Trump’s statement came after a high-level meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where both leaders discussed strategic security partnerships. The increased military cooperation is widely perceived as part of U.S. efforts to counter China’s influence in the Asia-Pacific region.
China Criticizes ‘Exclusive Circles’ in Asia-Pacific
Responding to Trump’s announcement, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun warned against turning the Asia-Pacific into a “chessboard for geopolitical maneuvering.” He stated that forming “exclusive circles” would not contribute to security but would instead destabilize regional and global peace.
Guo added, “In developing relations and conducting cooperation between nations, it is important not to use China as a talking point, nor should it be an opportunity to incite group politics and bloc confrontation.”
Growing US-India Defense Ties and Regional Implications
The U.S. and India have been expanding their defense cooperation in recent years, with increasing arms sales and joint military exercises. The supply of advanced weaponry like the F-35 to India could significantly alter the regional power balance, raising concerns in Beijing.
While India has not explicitly framed its defense partnerships as targeting any specific country, its military modernization efforts align with broader U.S. strategies to counterbalance China’s growing military presence in the Indo-Pacific.
