Delhi’s Next CM: Woman MLA Likely, BJP to Decide Soon.

New Delhi: Following its resounding victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is now finalizing its choice for the next Chief Minister. According to media reports, the party is considering appointing a woman MLA as the new Chief Minister, marking a significant political shift in the capital’s leadership. Alongside the CM, the BJP is also likely to appoint a Deputy Chief Minister, with a strong possibility of selecting a leader from the Purvanchal region to maintain regional and caste balance in the leadership.
As discussions intensify within the party, Shikha Rai, who defeated AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj from the Greater Kailash seat, is emerging as the frontrunner in the race for CM. However, the final decision is expected to be made only after Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from his foreign tour.
BJP’s Strategy: Social Engineering and Representation
The BJP is focusing on inclusive representation while forming its new government in Delhi. The party is reportedly aiming to ensure social balance by appointing leaders from different castes, communities, and regional backgrounds to key positions in the state cabinet. Given the importance of Purvanchali voters in Delhi’s political landscape, the BJP is expected to offer a major position—most likely the Deputy CM post—to a leader from Purvanchal.
Shikha Rai Leading the CM Race?
Among the five women elected to the Delhi Assembly this time, four belong to the BJP, making them potential contenders for the top post. Sources suggest that Shikha Rai is currently the strongest candidate for the Chief Minister’s position. Rai’s victory against former Delhi Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj in Greater Kailash was one of the biggest upsets for AAP.
However, BJP leaders have hinted that the party may surprise everyone by choosing a less popular face for the CM post, a strategy they have used before in other states.
Women MLAs Who Won in Delhi
In this election, only five women were elected to the Delhi Assembly, four of whom are from the BJP:
1.Shikha Rai (BJP – Greater Kailash)
- Defeated AAP’s Saurabh Bhardwaj by 3,188 votes.
2. Rekha Gupta (BJP – Shalimar Bagh)
- Defeated AAP’s Bandana Kumari.
3. Poonam Sharma (BJP – Wazirpur)
- Defeated AAP’s Neeraj Gupta.
4. Neelam Pehelwan (BJP – Najafgarh)
- Defeated AAP’s Tarun Kumar by 29,009 votes.
5. Atishi (AAP – Kalkaji)
- The only AAP leader to have won among women candidates.
With four out of five winning women candidates from BJP, the party leadership is expected to consider them for key positions, including the Chief Minister’s post.
BJP’s Decision-Making Process
The BJP’s central leadership is known for making unexpected and strategic decisions when selecting a Chief Minister. Previously, the party has often picked less popular or new faces for CM positions in various states to maintain political control and expand its voter base.
According to news agency PTI, the final decision will be influenced by several factors:
- Political equations in Delhi
- Regional and caste balance
- The party’s long-term electoral strategy
- Modi and BJP’s core leadership directives
While no official announcement has been made yet, sources suggest that the BJP will soon unveil its decision, potentially making history by appointing a woman Chief Minister in Delhi for the first time ever.
