China Protests Panama’s Exit from BRI, Warns of Consequences.

Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs Zhao Zhiyuan met with Panamanian Ambassador to China Miguel Humberto Lecaro Barcenas on Friday, lodging a serious protest over Panama’s recent decision to cease the Memorandum of Understanding on Belt and Road cooperation. The protest was officially conveyed through the website of the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
China Regrets Panama’s Departure from BRI
Zhao emphasized that China deeply regrets Panama’s announcement to withdraw from the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). He stated that the initiative has significantly strengthened China-Panama cooperation across various sectors, delivering tangible benefits to Panama and its people.
Belt and Road Initiative’s Global Impact
More than 150 countries actively participate in the BRI, with its economic and infrastructural developments positively impacting millions worldwide. Zhao noted that Panama has reaped considerable benefits from its involvement and that reversing course on the agreement does not align with Panama’s fundamental interests.
China Reaffirms Respect for Panama’s Sovereignty
Zhao reiterated that China respects Panama’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He highlighted China’s commitment to upholding equality among all nations, regardless of size, and emphasized mutual respect and adherence to commitments as core diplomatic principles.
Accusations Against the United States
Zhao accused the United States of exerting pressure and employing arbitrary actions to undermine China-Panama relations. He claimed that U.S. interference aims to disrupt the progress made through the BRI, urging Panama to resist external influence.
China Calls for Panama to Reconsider Decision
Zhao emphasized that China-Panama relations should not be affected by third-party interference. He urged Panama to make independent decisions based on long-term bilateral interests and mutual benefits for their peoples.
Panama’s Response to China’s Protest
In response, Ambassador Lecaro stated that Panama values its relationship with China and assured that he would report the situation to his government for further consideration. However, it remains uncertain whether Panama will reverse its decision regarding the Belt and Road Initiative.
Future of China-Panama Relations
China remains hopeful that Panama will steer clear of external pressure and realign its stance with the broader strategic interests of both nations. The diplomatic tension following Panama’s withdrawal from the BRI raises questions about future economic collaborations and geopolitical alliances.
