AAP Government in Punjab Enforces Accountability Among Bureaucrats Post-Delhi Defeat.

Following the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) poor performance in the Delhi Assembly elections, the Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has issued strict directives to its bureaucrats. Officers across various departments have been instructed to be more responsive and accountable, with public feedback and input from MLAs and MPs playing a crucial role in evaluating their performance.
Strict Measures Announced for Government Officials
In an official letter sent to all senior bureaucrats—including special chief secretaries, additional chief secretaries, financial commissioners, Director Generals of Police (DGPs), Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs), Deputy Commissioners (DCs), and field officers—the government warned of disciplinary actions, including service record entries and possible punishments, for non-compliance with these directives.
Chief Secretary’s Directives for Transparency and Efficiency
Chief Secretary K A P Sinha, during a high-level meeting on February 12, emphasized the need for full transparency, accountability, and integrity in public service delivery. This meeting was held just a day after AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal addressed the party leadership in Punjab.
He warned that performance evaluations would directly impact annual appraisals, with rewards for efficient officials and disciplinary actions for those failing to meet standards. “The feedback will organically lead to rewards and punishments, including entries in service records or disciplinary proceedings as the case may be,” stated the Chief Secretary.
Government’s Commitment to Corruption-Free Governance
The Punjab government reiterated its stance on delivering corruption-free governance, ensuring that bureaucratic inefficiencies and corrupt practices do not hinder public trust. The directive stated:
“The Government remains committed to ensuring full transparency, accountability, and integrity in public service delivery. As corrupt practices undermine public trust, weaken institutions, and hinder national growth, it is essential to eliminate such barriers.”
It further emphasized that no citizen should face harassment or be subjected to financial demands while interacting with government offices.
Improving Public Interactions with Government Officials
To enhance governance efficiency, the state government has mandated that all officials must ensure smooth and hassle-free public interactions at every level. They must work efficiently, remain courteous, and complete tasks within the shortest possible time.
Empowering MLAs and MPs After Internal Resentment
The move is also seen as an effort to empower elected representatives. Many AAP MLAs and MPs in Punjab had expressed dissatisfaction over being ignored in public offices, which had negatively affected their morale. By holding bureaucrats accountable, the government aims to strengthen the role of its elected leaders in governance.
With these new directives, the AAP government hopes to restore public trust and prevent bureaucratic inefficiencies from becoming a political liability.
