Delhi to Implement Ayushman Bharat Schemes, Health Infra Boost Planned.

After the change of power in Delhi, the implementation of two major health schemes under the Ayushman Bharat initiative—Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) and Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM)—has been cleared.
Health insurance benefits for poor and elderly
With the new government in place, Delhi residents, especially the poor and elderly above 70 years, will benefit from health insurance. Additionally, Ayushman Arogya Mandirs will be established to enhance primary health infrastructure.
Strengthening health infrastructure in Delhi
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed major gaps in the health infrastructure. To address this, the Central Government introduced the PM-ABHIM scheme in 2021 to improve healthcare facilities nationwide.
Government plans massive investment in health centers
Under this initiative, Rs 2,406 crore was sanctioned for Delhi to build 1,139 urban health and wellness centers, 11 district integrated public health labs, and ten critical care blocks. These centers were later renamed Ayushman Arogya Mandirs.
Funding structure for healthcare projects
A significant portion of the PM-ABHIM scheme funds—Rs 2,058.75 crore—was allocated for strengthening primary healthcare. The Central Government committed Rs 1,232.25 crore, while the Delhi government was to contribute Rs 823.5 crore.
Previous AAP government’s focus on Mohalla Clinics
The AAP government prioritized Mohalla Clinics, aiming to set up 1,000 such centers. However, only 545 were established in ten years, and many remain non-operational due to financial and administrative issues.
Corruption allegations in Mohalla Clinics
Reports of corruption in the operation of Mohalla Clinics have surfaced. This led health officials to recommend implementing PM-ABHIM to provide more structured and efficient healthcare services.
Future of healthcare in Delhi
If PM-ABHIM is implemented, Delhi will see the construction of 1,139 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, significantly boosting healthcare accessibility and infrastructure in the national capital.
