China Condemns US Tariffs, Vows WTO Case and Countermeasures.
China strongly opposes the latest US tariff hikes on Chinese goods and has vowed to take necessary countermeasures to protect its legitimate rights and interests, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on Sunday.
China Criticizes US Tariffs, Calls for WTO Compliance
The Chinese government firmly deplores and opposes the US’ decision to impose additional 10% tariffs on Chinese imports, arguing that trade and tariff wars benefit no one.
“The US’ unilateral tariff hikes severely violate World Trade Organization (WTO) rules. This move cannot resolve the US’ domestic issues and will only harm both sides and the global economy,” the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.
In response, China plans to file a lawsuit with the WTO against what it calls the US’ wrongful trade practices. The Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) confirmed that China will take corresponding countermeasures to protect its interests.
China Rejects US Allegations on Fentanyl Crisis
In addition to the trade dispute, China addressed the US fentanyl crisis, dismissing attempts to link it with trade policies. The ministry asserted that China has one of the strictest drug control policies in the world and has been actively cooperating with the US in its anti-drug efforts.
“The fentanyl crisis is a US issue, not China’s. In 2019, at the US’ request, China became the first country to officially list fentanyl-related substances as a controlled class,” the ministry emphasized.
The ministry further warned that additional tariffs imposed by the US will harm bilateral cooperation on drug control efforts, urging Washington to take objective and rational measures instead of pressuring other nations with coercive trade tactics.
US Tariff Hikes Face Global Criticism
The US’ protectionist measures have faced strong opposition globally. The China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) expressed deep regret and strong opposition, stating that the unilateral tariff hikes:
- Violate WTO rules
- Increase costs for US companies and consumers
- Disrupt global trade and supply chain stability
A CCPIT spokesperson called on the US to halt its erroneous actions, engage in dialogue, and work towards global economic stability.
China Calls for Cooperation Instead of Conflict
MOFCOM urged the US to correct its trade policies, meet China halfway, and engage in dialogue based on mutual respect and economic stability.
“China hopes the US will address its domestic issues rationally instead of using tariffs as a coercive tool,” the ministry said, adding that no country wins in a trade war.
