Damascus, Syria – In a historic turn of events, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has been ousted following a swift coup, marking the end of nearly five decades of Assad family rule. Rebel leader Ahmed al-Shara has been appointed as the interim President of Syria, according to official statements from the new government.
Rebel Leader Ahmed al-Shara Takes Charge
On Wednesday, Colonel Hassan Abdul Ghani, spokesman for the military operations of the newly formed government, confirmed that Ahmed al-Shara, leader of the former Islamist rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), has taken charge as interim President. Shara’s faction played a crucial role in toppling Assad’s regime, paving the way for a transitional administration.
“Ahmed al-Shara has been appointed as the interim President of Syria to lead the nation through this critical period of transition,” Ghani announced.
HTS, now the dominant ruling force in Syria, has formed an interim government. Previously, on December 10, Mohammad al-Bashir was appointed as the head of an interim administration. Bashir, born in 1983 in Jabal al-Zawiya, Idlib province, had long been an influential figure in rebel-held territories.
Rebels Capture Aleppo and Damascus, Forcing Assad into Exile
The coup was initiated on November 27, 2024, when rebels launched a large-scale offensive against the Assad government in Aleppo. By Sunday, the strategic city had fallen into rebel hands, marking a significant milestone in the battle against the regime. Soon after, Damascus, the capital, was also captured, effectively sealing Assad’s fate and forcing him to flee the country.
Following Assad’s exile to Russia, massive celebrations erupted in the streets of Damascus. Rebel forces liberated thousands of political prisoners who had been detained under Assad’s rule, marking a symbolic end to his regime.

The ouster of Bashar al-Assad brings an end to the Assad family’s nearly 50-year rule over Syria.
